Ransomware: The Most Profitable Malware in History

person on laptop

Hackerman Stock ImageRansomware doesn’t play favorites, it can attack anyone’s device, at anytime. Think you’re not a target? Think again. Today’s ransomware attacks are automated and it’s as easy as opening a link in an email to lose all your data.

Because ransomware creators don’t discriminate, this makes them the most successful and profitable malware, ever. And this is an industry that just keeps getting more profitable as ransomware creators find more ways to infiltrate your data.

So, what can you do to protect your company’s data? Do you have a multi-layer defense in place?

Educate yourself. What is ransomware and how does it present itself? Ransomware comes in many forms, whether it be through text messages, spam email, malicious code or through an infected website you happen to visit. You may think that having anti-virus software and being careful about what emails you open and what websites you visit will keep your data safe… that’s no longer the case. Additionally, even “secure” sites you visit everyday can be compromised, which then compromises your data as well.

Backup once, backup twice, backup, again. This is something that EVERYONE should be doing at least daily to protect your (and your clients!) data. Furthermore, you should be cognizant of which share network (if any) your company uses and how your company stores data, i.e. network shares, sharepoint or an industry specific database.

Another important tip – don’t forget is to test your backup to make sure all of your data is actually there.

Effective Firewalls. As hackers become more innovative, IT security becomes more complex and necessary. For example, it is a fact that email gateways are the most common route for a ransomware infiltration. And your spam folder doesn’t protect you from the serious viruses that ransomware creators utilize today. The best way to prevent becoming a victim by email is by having a combination of a good firewall and email gateway.

Ultimately the best way to protect your company’s data is to refer to cybersecurity specialists.

Do you know what websites your employees are visiting? Are you having issues with viruses/malware? Do you need assistance determining if your current safeguards are enough? Find out before it’s too late. If you’d like a free 30-day firewall audit to help diagnose the current state of your network and determine next steps, feel free to contact us anytime at (800) 584-6844 or email sales@saalexIT.com.
